Rules & Guidelines

General Information
  • Solo or Ensembles are welcome
  • String, Wind, and Voice performers may perform:
    • Solo repertoire with live accompaniment
    • Solo repertoire with any kind of recorded/digital/electronic accompaniment
    • Solo repertoire must be performed with accompaniment, if the piece was originally written with accompaniment
Number of Students & Total Playing Time
Each teacher may enter up to a maximum of 15 minutes of total playing time divided among:
  • Solo Performers OR
  • Ensemble Groups OR
  • Solo Performers and Ensemble Groups combined
  • We encourage teachers to submit as many students as they have prepared
  • Students may be in Grades K-12, College, or Adult, but must be playing at CM Level 4 (or equivalent) and higher
    • See Repertoire information below
  • Any teacher with more than 15 minutes of total playing time is encouraged to contact the Co-Chairs to see if there is enough time to accommodate the extra time/students
Repertoire
  • Any classical solo or ensemble literature from any era
  • Students must be playing at CM Level 4 (or equivalent) and higher
    • Students do NOT need to be registered for CM to participate in this Festival
  • Maximum of two unrelated works may be programmed
    • Movements from the same piece or collection of shorter pieces are considered ONE work

Solo Performers: $25 fee per solo performer

  • Solo Performers must be Students
  • Solo Performers include
    • Piano Soloists
    • Guitar/Wind/Brass/String/Voice Soloists (unaccompanied)
    • Guitar/Wind/Brass/String/Voice Soloists (accompanied on piano by non-student collaborative artist, teacher, or parent)
Ensemble Groups: $30 fee per ensemble group (covers all members of the ensemble group)
  • Ensemble Groups are chamber music ensembles of two or more performers
  • All members of Ensemble Groups must be Students, unless the work is for multiple "soloists" with accompaniment
  • At least one member of the Ensemble Group must be a Student of an MTAC Santa Monica Bay Branch Teacher
  • Ensemble Groups include
    • Piano Four Hands (Duets), Piano Duos, etc.
    • Instrumental and/or Vocal Ensembles with/without piano
Memorization & Performing Experience
  • Memorization for Piano solo literature is mandatory.
  • Memorization for Guitar solo literature (unaccompanied and accompanied) is mandatory.
  • Memorization for Vocal solo literature (unaccompanied and accompanied) is mandatory.
  • Memorization for other Non-Piano Instrumental solo literature is optional.
  • Memorization for all Ensemble Groups (chamber music) is optional.
  • Students must have previous performing experience.
Etiquette & Concert Dress
  • All performers must stay for the entirety of their assigned recital program.
  • All performers must appear in CONCERT DRESS.
    For example, NO T-shirts, clothing with advertising, jeans, shorts, sweatpants, mini-skirts, sneakers, or flip flops.
